Gatun Lake at a glance

Gatun Lake is the high point of the Panama Canal. Ships enter it from the Pacific side through the Miraflores and Pedro Miguel locks, cross the Culebra Cut, sail across the lake and leave it through the Gatun locks on the Atlantic side. The lake sits about 85 feet (26 m) above sea level, which is why ships are lifted up to it and lowered again afterward. This is not a constant height difference between the two oceans, only the level of the lake.

The whole canal is about 50 miles (80 km) long. The canal authority gives an average of 8 to 10 hours for a ship to get through, so a large part of any full transit happens on the lake. The shores are covered by rainforest, and the lake is the water supply of the canal itself, which is why its level matters so much to the people who run it.

You can see Gatun Lake in four ways: on a full transit, on a boat excursion with wildlife watching, from a cruise ship or from land. They are very different trips, and mixing them up is the most common planning mistake.

Monkey Island and wildlife on the lake

The lake has small islands where monkeys live in the trees, and boat excursions on Gatun Lake advertise wildlife watching around them. Capuchin monkeys are a common sight in Panama, but a sighting is never guaranteed. A boat trip on the lake does not include a lock transit either, so read the description carefully.

Some rules are clear. Do not feed wild animals. The environment ministry, MiAmbiente, explicitly bans feeding wildlife on the El Charco trail in Soberania National Park, and the same page also prohibits taking animals or plants, smoking and pets on that trail. Feeding changes how monkeys behave, makes them lose their fear of people and can lead to bites. A good operator does not offer feeding as part of the trip, and you should not ask for it.

  • Keep your distance and let the animals come to their own decisions. Do not touch them, grab for them or call them.
  • Keep food and bags closed in the boat and on the trails.
  • Follow the instructions of your guide or boat captain. They know the current situation on that stretch of water.
  • Do not assume that you may swim anywhere on the lake. Ask your operator first.

Soberania National Park

Soberania National Park covers forest and water resources in the canal watershed. According to MiAmbiente it is open daily from 6:30 am to 4 pm. Visitors should register at the park administration or online, stay on the marked trails and follow safety instructions. The park administration and visitor center were reinaugurated on May 24, 2026 after renovation, together with visitor areas and trails. That does not mean every trail is open at all times, so ask at the park office when you register.

Park rules are simple. No pets, no alcohol and no fire. Avoid noise, and cut down on plastic before you enter.

El Charco trail

El Charco has its own rules, and they should not be applied to the rest of the park. As of 2026 it is open Tuesday to Sunday from 8 am to 4 pm and closed on Mondays for maintenance. Access to the trail is free. A toilet and a picnic area are optional and cost $2.50 per person per day each, and a reservation at least 72 hours ahead is required for them.

Gatun Lake is not the Chagres River

Many visitors mix up the two. Gatun Lake is the canal lake, and boat excursions on it focus on the water and the islands. The Chagres River and Chagres National Park lie in a different area, and many community visits use the Chagres area, not Gatun Lake. If you are planning a day with an Emberá community, read our guide to visiting an Emberá village and check which river or lake your tour really uses.

The Agua Clara viewpoint

If you prefer to stay on land, the Agua Clara Visitor Center near Colón looks out over the lake and the expanded canal on the Atlantic side. As of 2026 it is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm, and the ticket office closes at 3:30 pm. Non-resident admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children aged 6 to 12, and children under 6 enter free. Plan about 3 hours. There is a film of 12 minutes and a nature trail of 1 km (0.6 mi). The cafe, restaurant and souvenir shop are listed as temporarily closed, so bring water. Read more about it on our visitor centers page.

Water levels: what they mean for your trip

Gatun Lake is also the water reservoir of the canal. Every lock passage uses water from it, so dry years hurt operations. In 2026 the canal authority has been taking water-saving measures. Its latest announcement, from September 2026, sets 33 daily slots from October 15 and a maximum draft of 49 feet (14.94 m) for the largest ships until further notice. It also says that a water deficit remains and that ships without a reservation may face delays.

For you as a visitor, the draft limit alone does not tell whether your boat tour or cruise runs. The limits concern commercial shipping. There is no general closure of the canal. Check your booking terms, and ask the operator about current conditions a few days before you travel. For the history of earlier dry spells, see the history of the canal.

Practical tips

  • Wear a hat and sunscreen, and bring water. The sun on the water is strong.
  • Bring a light rain jacket. The dry season runs roughly from December to April, and the rest of the year is green and wet. Our best time to visit guide shows the monthly rain figures.
  • Use a waterproof bag for your phone and camera.
  • Leave early. Canal tour boats usually depart in the early morning.
  • Not sure where the lake lies? Our map of the canal and its locks shows the route.

Gatun Lake: frequently asked questions

Can I see monkeys on Gatun Lake?

Often, but never for sure. Excursions on the lake include wildlife watching around the small islands, and capuchin monkeys are common in Panama. No operator can guarantee a sighting.

Is a Gatun Lake boat trip a canal transit?

No. A lake excursion does not pass through any locks. For a ship passage through the locks, look at a partial transit or a full transit, or at a cruise.

May I feed the monkeys?

No. Feeding wild animals is banned on the El Charco trail in Soberania National Park, and feeding makes animals dependent on people. Keep your distance, do not touch them and follow your guide.

When is Soberania National Park open?

Daily from 6:30 am to 4 pm. Register at the park administration or online. El Charco has its own hours, Tuesday to Sunday from 8 am to 4 pm.

How high is Gatun Lake?

About 85 feet (26 m) above sea level. Ships are lifted to this level by locks on both sides.

Does low water close the canal?

No general closure has been announced. The canal authority limits daily slots and the draft of the largest ships when the water level is low. Whether a tour runs is up to the operator, so ask before you go.
